The Tunnel of Chulalongkorn University
Do you know Chulalongkorn University well? As we are students, staff, and teachers of Chulalongkorn University, we spend time living at the university more than our homes. We come to learn or work at least five days a week. All of us walk through almost every square meter of the area; however, we still do not know some places in our campus clearly. One of the places that we walk past often is Chulalongkorn University’s tunnel. The tunnel of Chulalongkorn University has a few interesting stories that we never know before.
The tunnel of our university has a long time history. Due to unpopularity of flyover, the administrative board decided to build a tunnel which coasted the same amount of money instead. Professor Arun Sorathet, president of the college, designed the tunnel by himself. Finally, the underground passage was built in 1971 which took six months to complete. It is located between Faculty of Education and Faculty of Science at Phaya Thai Road. The construction became the first tunnel in Thailand and landmark of Chulalongkorn University. Moreover, this tube can obviously reduce the number of accidents since the first year it has been constructed.
Building the tunnel of Chulalongkorn University not only helps people cross the street safely but also makes people have activities to do at this place. We can admire beautiful pictures of museums and galleries of our university while we are walking along the tube. Those pictures also have useful information for us to study such as location, history, and opening hours. In addition, icy drink, delicious dessert, and yummy food with large quantity in a suitable prize can be found nearby.
It is known that we walk through and visit many places in our university including Chulalongkorn University’s tunnel; yet, we never know its background, do related activities, or appreciate value of that place completely. Living as people of Chulalongkorn University should understand all aforementioned things in order to make our lives meaningful.
