Do you still remember the first time you had to stay away from home for a long time? It must be a great time if you were on vacation with friends or family, but it must be tough if you were alone. For me, I can’t forget the first and the longest time I had to live far away from home and from my parents. Although it was tough, it was a great memory ever.
When I was 14, my parents sent me to Singapore for three months. Before going there, I had never been anywhere by myself because I was scared that I would be kidnapped. I could not even order food at the restaurant or eat out alone, because it was too awkward for me. Not to mention crossing the road, it was my worst nightmare. However, I decided to go to Singapore on summer holiday. On the first day there, I still remembered myself crying because I missed my parents. Luckily, I met my host family who I accidentally knew from social network. They took me to their house, and then we went out for dinner. They were so nice that I did not feel lonely anymore, but then I felt nervous instead.
It was my first day going to school where I applied for an English course. I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was thinking about how to cross the road, where I could have lunch, how to order food, and many more questions popped in my head. All of these were no longer my problem at all when I met my teacher. In class, she was teaching English grammar which I did not understand. She asked me to write an answer on the board after only 30 minutes I joined the class. Obviously, I couldn’t do it. I told her I didn’t know the answer, and she looked at me from head to toe. I felt so bad, but I had to put up with it. I studied by myself a lot and tried not to make any problem with her. Until one day, I misunderstood her instruction. She was so upset and scolded at me. I really wanted to go back home right there but I could not.
Every time I look back, every problem I have faced was so tiny, but they made a great change in my life. Like a normal 14-year-old girl, I only thought that it would be cool to go abroad. However, I got more than cool stories to boast about, I have gained a lot of experiences. I have visited many places by myself. I met bad people who were my lesson I would never learn in school. Also, I met nice people that made me feel like I was home. I will never forget that time in Singapore where I have found my home away from home.
