Grimm’s Fairy Tales

Grimm’s Fairy Tales

Are Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Rapunzel familiar to you? Of course, they are all princesses, or they are Disney princesses. However, the versions we have known nowadays are not the original one. The original versions were written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the German brothers or we all knew as the Grimm Brothers. They wrote numerious well-known stories which are called Children’s and Household Tales or Grimms’ Fairy Tales. Although the Grimms’ Fairy Tales were called as Children’s Tales, they still have some violences, brutalities, and immoralities which were not suitable for children.

For example, “Cinderella” as we all knew in Disney version story is pure and dreamy, but Grimm’s version is not. Grimm’s version of Cinderella has some violent parts of story, such as when the two stepsisters of Cinderella try glass slipper and it is not fit, the eldest stepsister cut her toes in order to fit the slipper while the other stepsister cut her heel.

Moreover, Disney version of “Snow White” is bright and also dreamy, yet in Grimm’s version there are some violent contents. Originally, the wicked queen is Snow White’s evil mother, but the Grimms changed the character to stepmother instead so that the story is reduced some brutal contents. In the end of the story, the wicked queen is forced to dance in red-hot iron shoes until the death comes to her.

The last one is “Rapunzel”. After Rapunzel and the prince spent many days together, she got pregnant though they did not marry. This is an immoral scence.

Grimms’ Fairy Tales which were written by the Grimm Brothers are well-known stories. They are not suitable for children even though they are fairy tales due to the fact that they contain some violences, brutalities, and immoralities. The first example, “Cinderella” has the scene showing violences. The stepsisters cut her toes and her heel in order to fit the slipper. Next, “Snow White” has violent scene at the end of the wicked queen. Finally, “Rapunzel” includes an immoral scene about getting pregnant before getting married. Grimm’s Fairy Tales may contain some pessimistic contents, but some tales are interesting, fun, and also fantasy.
