How to prepare yourself before traveling to Germany?

How to prepare yourself before traveling to Germany?

Soccer, sausage and beer = Germany!!!!!

Lots of Thai people nowadays travel more to Germany, especially young people.  The number of students who learn German in Thailand rises from year to year and they also do an exchange year there. However, lots of them have no idea how to prepare themselves for that journey or can’t find some useful information about is. Here are some tips, how you can prepare yourself before traveling to Germany!

Brandenburg Gate in Berlin at night. Germany.

  1. Apply for a Schengen Visa

A Schengen Visa is a document that everyone needs to travel to Europe. It can be used in almost every country in Europe and can be applied in the German embassy. You have to call them and make an appointment since there will be an interview. If you pass the interview, you can choose between 2 Schengen Visas

  1. Short stay visa, less than 90 days 60 Euros (about 2,400 Baht)
  2. Long stay visa, more than 90 days 90 Euros (about 3,600 Baht)

2.Get organized!

Germans are well known for their organization, no matter if it’s at work, at school or at home. So be prepared for it and start get organized from now on!! Germans love punctuality. You can see it easily at their train and railway organization. You have to be ON time to catch the train. The safest way is being there before the actual time, maybe 15 minutes before. Not only in this example, but everywhere!!! Even when you will meet friends, they will be really mad if you’re 5 minutes late.

3.Drink and eat like a German

Drink beer instead of water and eat bread instead of rice! This is how Germans do and everybody who wants to live in Germany should do as well. This is because beer is much cheaper than water and bread can be bought everywhere! I am sorry to all Thais, but you have to get used living without rice for a while. This anyways has also a good side, you can try out new food and who knows you might love it and totally forget rice. 😉

4.Daylight saving time

Germany is one of the countries which is in the daylight saving time project. This means they have two different times in one year, which are the summer time and the winter time. During summer months the time will be one hour longer than in the winter time, since there is more sunlight and no extra light is needed. I know it sounds very difficult, so let me explain it in an easier way. The time different between Thailand and Germany in summer will be 5 hours and in winter 6 hours. One of the most common mistakes which happen to tourists or exchange students, is that they are traveling on exactly that day when the time changes and they automatically miss their flight. So here is the information about the time changing process:

Last Sunday in March – change to summer time – 5 hour different to Germany
Last Sunday in March – change to winter time –    6 hour different to Germany

So always check this list before traveling to Germany or back to Thailand and make sure that you won’t miss your flight! 🙂
