The low levels of English proficiency among Thai students are becoming a serious issue. Students’ low proficiency of English seems to stem from inappropriate teaching approaches. Though most Thai students start their first English class early in elementary school, they still fail to use English fluently due to ineffective teaching approaches. English teaching in Thailand merely focuses on grammars for examinations and other academic purposes. As a result, students lacks skills in spoken English and finally fail to communicate. Another important factor that causes lack of English proficiency is student’s lack of confidence when using English. Students who have low self-confidence may refuse to speak English in publics. They don’t realize that making mistakes is the way that they can learn to improve their English, so they are afraid to be wrong and prejudiced about it. Consequently, students never achieve their goals in learning English. The last cause is students’ attitude towards English. Thai social contexts made students believe that imitating native speakers is an odd manner, especially speaking. For they are afraid of being criticized, they never participate in any kinds of English activities. For this reason, Thai students’ English proficiency is still far from satisfactory. If Thai students ever wish to be successful in the international community, they must first learn to properly educate their English.
