Have you ever heard about free online books and research for our Chula Community, but you do not know how to get them? The idea of new online data zone in the Central Library is the solution I would like to propose. Currently, surfing internet is one of the most popular ways that students and teachers use to do research for their work. Thus, both of the Office Information Technology (IT Chula) and the Center of Academic Resources (the central library) do their best to provide services that meet this need. According to an officer from IT Chula, Chulalongkorn University spent millions of baht to serve access to a great number of free online books and research for students and teachers via CU VPN. However, the process to access these data sources is too complicated, and only few students know about this privilege. For the central library’s role, there are already enough computers for searching information on the first and second floors. Yet, people mainly use the computers on the first floor to do their work, and the others on the second floor are barely touched.
The idea of new online data zone is to associate free online data sources and the ignored computers together. In other words, this idea needs an official cooperation between IT Chula and the central library. The first cooperation is that IT Chula should develop the user-friendly interface for logging in and searching data. Then, install this interface into the computers in the central library. Finally, the central library should set these computers in more widely-opened area. Once they have done these, all teachers and students can walk in easily and find their wanted information in only few clicks. In conclusion, by cooperating between IT Chula and the central library, the new online data zone will be situated in an outstanding spot where our community can access to free online data sources via the new computer interface conveniently.
